Time to do some modding on the old Fonera case.

All started some days ago when i looked at my Fonera and said: "I don't like you anymore, it's time to change".

Here are some pictures of one of my Foneras, this one is the "testing" one, i'll try the MMC-SD mod and the RS232 mod as soon as i can.




Now, let's talk about my 2200 Fonera. I had an old Ferrari toy and staring at it i've said "I think you can be a good case".

Done. I had to remove a cap on the pcb of the 2200 and re-solder it at the bottom because it clashed with the Ferrari body.
I tried also with a 2100 but it's too hot and i preferred to use a warm 2200 instead. Here are some pictures of the first 2100 version:

What about a modding contest?

There were promises of an "Ooooh La La Fonera" leg-lamp mod at one time. This would really be exciting!

But - modding La Foneras is undeniably "hacking" and violates the router's warranty. Perhaps this is a point of Fon's TOS which I don't understand, but would this not make the subject forbidden in this forum? Including this thread?

Yes, it definitely voids the warranty. I still like the idea though and maybe we can come up with a creative way to support it.

I'm waiting for improvements on the FON services, especially the current firmware,
francofon and freewlan already have several improvements that should be available on the Fon Firmware

I mean, I can certainly see a thread devoted to creative ways to mount fully-intact La Foneras indoors and outdoors... but Fon clearly forbids physical modification or use of the equipment in ways they do not intend. By association, this Official English Fon board would thus be unable to encourage such activity.

yea I know it voids warranty but as I mantain the main pcb board connected to the Internet i'm still a Fonero with full features.

i think that talking about non-fon-related firmware mod is the real "hacking" and thus not allowed to talk about, but in this case i see only the voidance of warranty and nothing more

ah, in the first case i'll be out of warranty (i've soldered a 2nd antenna) but in the second case i've just opened la Fonera and it can be reversed at any time, in facts Fon should apply a "warranty void if removed" sticker to the screws, like any other manufacturer does.

Right. You have a fully-functioning La Fonera with a fully-voided warranty.

The board's rules ban hacking *because it voids the warranty*. Opening the case, regardless of the reversability of actions taken within, also voids the warranty.

Anyway, i'm not against either hacking nor modding. When you see a house without window holes and no paint on the outside walls, it does not take a genius to say what needs to be fixed. This is La Fonera.

For all practical reasons, if we can get sanction for a Modding Thread here, based simply on popular interest, then we have precident for overriding any Board Rules.

This rocks! If the ferrari does not work any more as a fonera, i ld love to have it in exchange for a new one *hehe*
