Hi, i've published the following website : http://flash.fonera.be/
where you can find an easy flash tool (gui) for linux & windows
to flash the Fonera firmware onto your Classic Fonera, Fonera+ or Fonera 2.0
no more "telnet,tftp,apache" needed

I think it is a good start, but as a relatively 'newbie' I think it could be much better if you be much more specific what to do and what the requirements are. Just some I can think of:
- IP settings of the Windows PC I use
- LAN or WAN side of the Fonera?
- Screenshots?

Not necessary... libpcap library deals with it... so if not needed...i don't specify.

doesn't matter ... the division in a LAN/WAN section is only decided when the linux kernel boots... in that first few seconds they are both listening (as is the serial connection)
Quote:
- Screenshots?

it's 1 screen and a few comboboxes...and a big "go for it" button :-)
no "next" buttons to press :-)

What kind of an answer is this? Did you try opening the Fon Flash file? There are 5 things that need to be chosen to flash the router. What is "Image File", "Image2 File", "Loader File", "Network Interface", "Firmware Type"? If you try doing something, do it the right way!

the gas pedal is used to give more gas...

so let's order it as it is shown:

* firmware type : combo box tells it all : choose between fonera+/2, openwrt/gargoyle/FoneraClassic and Dd-wrt
* Network interface : choose the correct network interface of your computer which is connected to your fonera...
could be Broadcom, Realtek, Intel, ...
* loader/image/image2 are the choices if ou choose fonera+/2 -> if you downloaded the fonplus.zip file you will notice it contains a loader.bin, image.bin , Image2.bin
now do you need some "file mapping" jpg to know which is which?
* kernel/root -> if you check the fonera.zip you will find a kernel.lzma and rootfs.lzma file
again...do you require some kind of "file mapping"

anyway you are welcome to install a movie recorder and make a tutorial & put it on youtube; just like the other fon movies and i'll embed it on the webpage...

I have tryed to use this program with Fonera 2.0/2.2.5.0 and I get this message:

Code:
Non arp received. Make sure, the device is connected directly!
Peer MAC: 00:18:84:d0:16:9c
Peer IP : 0.0.0.0
Telnet for RedBoot not enabled.

I am trying with this program because I couldn't access to Redboot using ping and telnet to port 9000, but it seems that my Fonera 2.0 has a problem.

start the application;
connect to lan connector
power your fonera 2.0

it should work...I haven't heard about redboot being disabled on end user devices

Well I have tryed first to reset with button. After that I have connected F2 to PC with a straight cable (Do I need a crossove cable?), and now I get this:

Code:

this logs shows you are too late...the fonera2 has booted beyond the 2 second window...

I start the application...
then boot the fonera

i'm currently connected through "internet" connection

Of course, first of all I start the applicacion, and receiving "No packet" message until I connect F2.

Last error message was connecting to LAN (black port), if I connect cable to WAN (white), message is different:

I think I could try to connect via serial cable, like Fonera 1, but don't know if it is in the same way.

Yesterday I got my hands on the end user version of the la Fonera 2.0

They removed the "redboot" on network interface...
so you can't "flash" it as explained in the wiki...

We will have to wait untill they release the "developer switch" button

and even then you will only have the possibility to SSH to it; manually upload plugins (.fon & .tar.gz & .tgz) and have a green layout...

no ipk yet to enable redboot in bash?

Does anyone know how to connect via serial or jtag cable?

Thanks.

not really it was clearly mentioned that the version sold between october->february was intended for "developers"
and this version is meant for "end users"... But i'm also "surprised" they locked their foneras down again... There are still more grey suits then programmers at FON :-)

but they are planning a "developper button" which will enable the "green" developer modus again...
Unknown why they also disabled the "redboot" on ethernet...

You can use the Fonera+ guides on how to enable connect a serial cable
the 4 pins are thesame

So now, after I spent 3 hours trying to flash the fonera 2.0 (consumer edition, using the network cable), I discover that it isn't flashable???? Is this true???? Fon sucks.

So how can I flash it? Via serial cable, is anybody sure that it works?

TIA

Gianni

you can find under "applications" the /developer/ plugin...enabling this will turn your device "green" instead of "orange"
it will also allow you to "upload" applications... instead of only choose those that FON is offering themselves.

You can also now upgrade to eg "2.2.6RC1 developer edition" found on blog.fonosfera.org

which will also give you "ssh" support...and more features&fixes&stability (and new&unstable software :-)

there isn't a "redboot on ethernet"-enabler yet...
This prevents you for doing an "Fis init" (delete everything including failsafe)...

so if you might break the "image" during the flashing...there is still a "failsafe" image which allows you to retry the flashing (and WAIT for 30 minutes this time before interrupting the process)

So are these the steps to install a wrt firmware to the fonera 2.0 consumer edition?
- install the /developer/ plugin that can be found under "applications" ...enabling this will turn your device "green" instead of "orange"
- upgrade to eg "2.2.6RC1 developer edition" found on blog.fonosfera.org
- use ssh support to install another firmware http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/Firmware_Updat ... uctions/nl
- download an openwrt image... http://downloads.openwrt.org/kamikaze/8.09/atheros/ which one????

Thanks...
Gianni

you need an "image"-image and not "vmlinuz/rootfs"-images which are found on that url...

you could check wiki.fon.com -> fonera 2.0 -> development
and find out how to prepare your "ubuntu" for cross compiling
and then you can "checkout" Openwrt instead of FON-NG and compile the Openwrt 8.09
I believe it should contain not only the vmlinuz/rootfs but also the "image" you need...

Btw I'm unsure if you will have USB/3G (and picasa/youtube/webcam) support on openwrt 8.09...
but please report what you experience !!!

You can "build" that image with the fonimage.pl provided by fon, using the .lzma and the .squashfs files that you get with an openwrt compilation and generating the .image file.

Then you can install that firmware through ssh using the "mtd -r write image_name image" command.

However, I'm trying to do this with no success until now. I'm unable to communicate with the router. Is there any news from anybody? I've started to look at other routers, actually I though that fon2 was the best option if you wanted an openwrt firmware, but I see that things do not point to that direction.

Openwrt is allready installed (not the latest version)
and you could port the existing openwrt luci packages to it and offer them as .tar.gz for others to enrich their F2
you could check out the 3G section where you can find "disable fon services" ...and put it somewhere on the main fon gui... if you decide to not share your wifi....

For the rest the linksys 160NL looks great :-)
