LF2g is online. It is acting as a hotspot. I can log on to 'myplace' and 'Free-FON'. Sounds fine doesn't it? Well only if I am logged directly to 'myplace'. Before I installed my Netgear WNR37000 as my primary router, I could access GUI and via LAN on my XP machines. My previous router was Netgear WNR2000. What I cannot now do is logon to GUI through Firefox or IE8. Nor can I view and open folders and files through LAN typing \\192.168.10.1\media into Windows Explorer.

Netgear recognises LF2g by name and by MAC address, and gives it an IP ( 192.168.1.7 ). It also returns a ping with no packet loss. Latency is virtually zero. I tried applying a static route and tried dedicating the IP in LAN. Still no joy.

So, I tried reintroducing LF2g directly to my main Windows 7 PC first with Netgear in the loop, as a secondary router, and then without. Naturally I could access GUI through Firefox, but still I couldn't access through LAN. (The latter issue is a Windows 7 problem.) As soon as I returned to my original configuration, with Netgear as the prime router, access through GUI or LAN were still not possible from anywhere in my network.

Any ideas?

Maybe this is obvious, but worth a check: If is something wrong with cabling, it can happen that you get an IP address from DHCP of the primary router, not from F2, even if it's on. If both DHCP servers are on, they are fighting who assigns first the IP. In my case it happened once when accidentally plugged in the same switch both F2 WAN and LAN cables.
You can check simply: ipconfig on your Windows.

Sorry if this is too obvious....

Nothing is too obvious for me.

Perhaps I should explain my configuration. The netgear WNR3700 router is the main hub. Two XP laptops connect by radio adaptor. A Windows 7 Media Laptop connects through a gigabyte ethernet cable. The Main PC links via a patch cable. A second ethernet cable runs to my roof space to a gigabte spliter. Off that I run a network HDD 1TB and my Fonera linked to a USB HDD 1TB. All this worked beautifully until I upgraded from WNR2000 to WNR3700. I have set the new router up with the same settings as the old. Perhaps there is some security setting on the WNR3700 that blocks the Fonera.

You have a complicated network, and you did you not explained what is most important:
F2G's LAN port is connected to some switch ? what about WAN port? where is connected ?
ipconfig on your windows ? ip, mask, default gateway, dns.
ping to 192.168.10.1 ?
ping to 192.168.1.7 ( or whatever IP is assigned to F2G)
ip of NAS ? you can ping it ?
ip of LAN on Netgear ? you can ping it ?

With so many unknown parameters it's hard to tell what is your specific problem. :?

perhaps his fonera had a fixed ip on his previous netgear...and now has an ip between 1 and 254
or his fonera really had a FIXED ip but the new netgear has a totally new network range...

perhaps not "all" settings have been copied? did he limit himself to portforwarding , naming of wireless, username/password for network access?

OK. Here goes.

I have confirmed that I can ping all devices on the network with no packet loss and a maximum of 1ms journey time. Most journey times are 0ms. This includes Netgear router 192.168.1.1, NAS 192.168.1.2, the gateway to LF2g 192.168.1.7 and LF2g itself 192.168.10.1. I won't bore you with the laptops and netbook.

The ip for my main Windows 7 machine is 192.168.1.11, mask is 255,255,255,0, Gateway, DNS, DHCP are all 192.168.1.1

LF2g is connected to the system via a Netgear GS605 UK 5-Port Gigabyte Ethernet Switch. This switch is in my roof space at the end of a gigabyte ethernet cable (type 5E). I have only ever needed to connect to the LF2g WAN. Should I also connect the LF2g LAN back to switch? I see no point in that. Also connected to the switch is the NAS (MyBookworld 1TB)

I hope this clarifies my config. There seem to be no hardware connection issues. I am assuming we are talking about a permissions problem.

The knowledge base for my WNDR3700 is http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/11640

User manual is http://documentation.netgear.com/wndr3700/enu/202-10434-01/usermanual.pdf

Just to remind you. I can only connect to LF2g GUI if I log onto 'MyPlace'. Browser to GUI or LAN connections to directories and files are no longer possible through the Netgear router. My previous router WNR2000 allowed full connection to LF2g.

Thanks for your interest.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------New info:
Interestingly when I try to log onto LF2g from my Windows 7 netbook* through LAN it recognises LAFONERA as part of the network but says my password user name combination are wrong. I have used 'admin' and 'fonero' and 'media' and the name I have given the USB HDD as user names. None work. I know the password is correct because that is the one I have given it.
*This is with an ethernet and myplace connection running together.

Ok, so the problem boils down to the fact that you can't administer La Fonera through the WAN from your Netgear's network?

Fon recently moved the WAN admin port to 443. You'll need to update your shortcuts to add a ":443" to the end of the url.

I haven't updated LF2g firmware for a couple of months now, on the basis that, if it works don't fix it. Will the :443 apply in my case?

I tried it any way. Doesn't recognise the url.

I have always and still do maintain DHCP and automatic DNS in LF2g for internet connection. Any fixing of IPs has been done from the Netgear end. The new netgear wouldn't accept the WNR200 config file so I manually set it as before. I tried portforwarding, static routes, and IP allocation in LAN config, together, separately and not at all. IP before new netgear was 192.168.1.16. It is now ......1.7. ie all normal range. This would make no difference surely.

I have tried to update network shortcuts to LF2g on all my XP machines. It is impossible to set up new shortcuts because XP can't see LF2g anyway.

No. I just mean that F2G can be upgraded safely using the LAN port. And the best thing to test internet connectivity is also from LAN port, then you can go to advanced configuration.
Sincerely I'm lost in your very detailed ( but very pointless ) descriptions (like your switch in the roof, an so on and on ...). :(

F2G, like any other router can be setup very easily using a bit of common sense, like:
- I'm on the right subnet of F2G's LAN ? Yes >> next step
- can I ping F2G's LAN default gateway IP ? ( that is 192.168.10.1 if you perform a factory reset) >> ok
- http://192.168.10.1 works, it's the GUI ? >> ok
- upload the latest firmware file ( the tar.gz one, not the image. so don't extract it)
- wait for the upgrade 30 minutes. You can ping -t 192.168.10.1 meanwhile to see when it perform the automatic reboot.
- if it's not rebooting automatically, then reset after 45 minutes
- http://192.168.10.1 > GUI > change the password ( you must change it, there is a bug in the FW with samba if you don't change it)
- configure WAN ( dhcp, pppoe, whatever ...)
- Connect the Wan CABLE. Be aware to NOT connect LAN and WAN in the same physical network (because of the 2 DHCP servers)
- reset
- from LAN side do some pings and traceroutes for every hop
And now the advanced stuff:
- configure FTP and SAMBA from WAN
- set SSH from WAN if you upgraded with DEV version
- if you wish you can change to DEV from Plugins ...
- configure Wifi if you want settings other then default
- configure port forwards if you need it.

It should work ! Unless you are doing something very wrong ... or....your F2G is defective.

I gave all that information because it was asked for.

Firmware was updated in August. All the set ups you talked about were done then. All worked fine until my router upgrade.

So you are saying that LF2g should be reset from scratch because I have changed my main router? I will do so if you think that will make a difference. Also, has there been new firmware since August?

You will see from my pointless detail that I can already ping 192.168.10.1 and its gateway ip 192.168.1.7 from every machine in the network. According to you it should be working fine already.

Thanks for your input. No doubt I will do as you say because nothing else works so far.

Not necessarily. But if nothing works as expected, it's a good idea to do that.

vinsuk wrote:

Sorry, didn't want to offense you. I just wanted to point out that in a network diagnostic procedure it has no importance where is your switch, or how many windows machines you have and where they are. The diagnostic has to be done step by step, specifying exactly your network topology. Starting with very basic stuff, like IP's and physical connections of the main links like WAN / LAN ports.
You see... you built your network so you know what you done. But I don't.

Next time you ask for help please use this example:
Hi, I have a netgear, that is the main router. It has PPPoE to the internet, the LAN gateway IP is... , the DNS is ...., the mask is.... And I have a F2G with Firmware ... that has the WAN port connected to netgear's LAN. It has DHCP set on WAN, it gets the IP: ... from netgear, DNS: ... mask..., and on LAN of F2G I have IP:..... My Windows XP is conencted to LAN of F2G, LAN card has DHCP enabled. Please help, I have no internet access.

You have to understand that, being a bit of a newbie, the terminology and the principles of networking do not roll off my tongue.

I reset to factory settings and installed the most recent firmware. I have even attached a different HDD. Initially I have only changed the password. Everything except the name of the HDD and transmission are default. I can ping LF2g's gateway 192.168.1.7 and also 192.168.10.1 from all network devices. LF2g also shows up on the main router as Fonera in attached devices, But, still I cannot connect with GUI through my browser, unless I am logged to MyPlace. Nor can I access through Windows Explorer. ie \\192.168.10.1\media OR \\192.168.10.1\Enterprise (Name of disk)

However, I do get an error message with details:- "The device or resource (192.168.10.1) is not set up to accept connections on port 'The file and printer sharing (SMB)'." Now I don't fully understand SMB (SAMBA) What exactly should I configure from the main router end, if anything? What should I now configure at the LF2g end?

OMG! I've been to that section so many times, trying the limited number of alternatives. I just never knew that was SAMBA!! I tried the settings I had with my old router. Still doesn't work with the new router. I used to have everything enabled.

So all this time his problem was that he couldn't access fileshares *aboard La Fonera*? I wish someone had clued me in after my last post. I thought he just couldn't get to the web admin.

You have to be a Genius to understand these posts. See this guy's first post: "Before I installed my Netgear WNR37000 as my primary router, I could access GUI and via LAN on my XP machines. My previous router was Netgear WNR2000". So he is talking about replacing another router, not F2G !
And see one of the latest post: "I just never knew that was SAMBA!! I tried the settings I had with my old router. Still doesn't work with the new router".

WFT ! Do you get it ? What settings is he talking about, and on which router ?

I do no understand. I'm going back to Italia ! Arivederci !
