After 21 days of waiting, I got it today. I tried to let it work, but I'm in despair.
It keeps dying per 10~20 seconds. I tried every channel, but in vain.
I upgraded to latest firmware, but it still dies.
USB Hard disks with JBOD function only connects 1 HDD. (I asked it to customer support team after ordered the router, they said it would work well, though)
Bah.. what am I supposed to do?

update :
  • Day 1 : It did not lost connection in "ONLY" G mode with channel 1. / Loses with N.
  • Day 1 : I attached another FAT32 formatted USB disk. It was seen in the DASHBOARD. After applying "enable directory writing", fonera did not find usb disk. After set factory default, it found usb disk again.
  • Day 2 : Disabled Fonera spot and it worked without lossing connection.
  • Day 2 : Transmission app on router does not start transmitting.
  • Day 2 : Torrents apps such as Transmission or Vuze cannot make transmitting, even though it makes some udp connections. My old 54g router did very well.
  • Day 3 : Some files in download folder were gone. Names of rest files have been changed into graphical language. Files with only english names were remain as they were.
  • Day 3 : Started to give messages that "Your internet is misconfigured" with yellow screen (then it guided m to its green configuration screen) and made some shortcuts such as downloads, picasa on the desktop of DELL vostro 1520 laptop, which would be made in usb HDD.

Bah, search this forum for what we always advise for this, the most common, and well documented problem. The solution where you disable sleep and power save.

If you're changing your wifi channel, choose 6. Only choose between 1, 6 or 11.

Thanks for the answer, but it is not that problem.

While working, it just loses connection.

Not only my macbook, my wife's DELL vostro also losts connection.

I read all faq and forum and wiki about that.

I never seen a router like this through my 20 years of computing and network.

Instead of complaining why don't you give your topic post a name indicative of the problem and describe in details the problem itself? A little investigation and report on the status panel of the fonera can help people help you.

Hint: you can connect by cable to see where the problem is.

So what? The posts you got some years back were from newbies... and littleton may be just the same; new to the community. More help needed, less ridicule.

If it isnt working out of the box, and many people are having problems with the new "n", as am I, then there really is an issue. fon.com needs to get on this board and start helping... we cant expect the community to solve all these teething problems. fon.com are conspicuous by ther absence; here, and to answering tickets on the "other" login area.

A free device is one thing, but EUR 79.99 plus EUR 10 post requires proper customer support! Where is it?

Thanks Guys.

If you ever fought with a new router all day like me, you must be too tired to demonstrate all, but be frustrated.

I was. and still I am.

Finally I found how let this router does not lose connection.

I turned off Fonera Spot and the problem went away.

Still, I have another problem that torrents are not working, which my old 54g router did.

Not only Transmission app on router, Transmission on my macbook or Vuze cannot make transmitting, even though it makes some udp connections.

Ok, if the problem was solved by disabling one of the SSIDs, then it WAS THE PROBLEM WHICH IS PROPERLY SOLVED BY UPDATING YOUR WIFI DRIVERS, DISABLING POWER SAVE/SLEEP FEATURES.

There is no driver update on macbook pro and I disabled sleep mode while it is connected to the AC power.

And my wi-fi card on macbook is not intel 3945ABG, it's broadcom. (as in FAQ)

My wife's DELL vostro 1520 has broadcom also. and sleep mode is also disabled.

I have spent, in total, about 10hrs, trying every which way to get my Fonera 2.0n to work properly (chained). No, I'm not a linux or fonera qualified technician, but yes, I am an amateur expert that can quite happily set up a VPN WAN network over 3 countries, incl. ISDN over IP for a international networked telephone system, 2x FTP servers and HTTP servers over one IP address using port forwarding. So, I consider myself "able enough".

But fonera 2.0n? No.

Conclusion: the "n" is majorly buggy at this time. It is going into the "junk box" until firmware 2.5 or later. Then I will try again. I dont have the time to play alpha-tester with the fonera.

Will I be recommending the fonera? No. In fact, this plastic box will probably appear on ebay pretty soon if the fon guys dont get more active in customer support and releasing firmware.

It seems that fon is a "one or two man band" that got too big too fast.

You are saying what I was wanted to saying, though I was thinking about 'beta tester', you say more tough.

And you did quite similar job like me. I had set networks and constructed network system through Korea, Indonesia, New Zealand, Turkey and now in the U.S.

I experienced more than 20 routers. Fonera 2.0N needs more time to be well-done.

Dear edgesharp

I am sorry to see the FON support didn't match your expectations. I try to help as much as I can, so do the developers, customer support team and volunteers in the different channels for communication (email, IRC, forums, wiki and even twitter, lol). But we can't make always everybody happy.

As for the 802.11n being not mature... well. The driver we are using is developed directly by Ralink, the chip manufacturer. It has been certified by the WiFi alliance on other devices and is in fact, pretty mature. Unfortunately the double SSID is something that is not commonly used by many manufacturers and is not part of the WiFi alliance certification and looks like we ran into a bug here.

We are currently looking at it, with the direct support of Ralink and hope to have it fixed soon. If your conclusion is still that you are 'ALPHA testing' (wow, that's definitely worse than I expected to hear) a product, you better sell it on ebay as you say. I hope someone will buy it and be the happy owner of a fonera 2.0n, even happier when the bug is fixed ;)

But I would really love to fix the problem soon enough so you can enjoy the fonera better than being disappointed with it. I am, besides the responsible of the product, a happy fonera 2.0n owner and user, since my laptop does not have these issues and I honestly recommend it.

Thanks for your comments!

Dear iurgi,

Thanks for your interest and help. It's great that there IS a community of people supporting and assisting others.

My complaint is twofold: First that the "n" is buggy and not working out of the box for some/some setups. Yes, it DOES work in some configurations, but the basic one, chain off an existing router, isnt for me and it isnt giving any useful diagnostic data. It would be good if it did. Something we could all work with.

The second complaint is that fon is pretty much absent from the help pages. There are 4 mods here. One hasnt visited for over a year. Another over 6 months. And the remaining two are active but with limited resources, are only able to "mod" and not provide constructive support/customer service. For a company charging EUR 80 for a product, there needs to be a bit more after-sales.

If the "n" isnt working, it should be possible to return with immediate refund. Having to ebay it is a bit silly, and my suggestion of doing so is more pathos than actual threat.

***

I am happy to support any fon rep. or any community member that wants to get to the bottom of my issues. Give instructions, and I will reply with results.

I too would like to see the "n" functioning as advertised. That, after all, is why I bought one and why I am now registered and using the forum.

***

I think there is an issue other than the Ralink drivers and wireless functionality. Even with a wired connection, when I chain the "n" I cannot get the heatbeat/http working, BUT skype IS working. Can you explain that? Odd. Some ports/packets are getting through. Others not. When I connect directly to the modem over PPPoE, it works as expected. Something up with the DHCP/DNS/Gateway?

This morning, the router started to give me messages with yellow screen. "Your internet setting is misconfigured."

I tested with my Macbook pro, Vostro 1520 and ipod 2nd gen.

And I found that some files are gone and the names of rest files are changed into some mechanical icons from downloads folder of attached usb hard disks. Those files had been moved from my macbook via wireless, since torrent application in router was not working.

I imagined a wonderful self-torrent-downloader with N spec router when I was buying this thing, but I think the only working parts as designed are LEDs.

The conclusion is that this router could be good match for some people, but surely this is not for me right now.

Now I want to refund this. This router is defective or manufactured wrongly from the factory level.

Hmmm this is really weird. I don't understand very well the description, but it's definitely new. Can you please help me and describe a little bit better what you mean by "when I chain the n I cannot get the heartbeat/http working"?

You are using PPPoE on the Fonera? I mean is it connected to a modem and you configured the username and password on the fonera?
