Hi,

I just updated my Nokia E61 phone to the just released new firmware. Unfortunately since this update the WLAN connection to my La Fonera (private and public SSID) is quite unstable, the loading of web pages often hangs etc., e.g. when navigating in my GMail account. The Exchange synchronisation with mail2web.com also stopped working. It seems that SSL encrypted connections somehow trigger the problem.

My standard access point still works flawlessly with the updated E61.

Any ideas?

Bye,
Jan

... it seems that this problem is somehow caused by the "WLAN Power Save" feature of the phone. After turning this off the problems are gone. As this probably drains the batteries I hope Fon and / or Nikia are able to optimize the connection between their devices.

Bye,
Jan

The La Fonera has only one transciever. Since it can only transmit one SSID beacon at a time, it uses a neat trick in order to transmit the other. It signals that it is going into "sleep mode", but immediately "wakes up" again, and swaps SSIDs. This repeats.

This appears to be an issue with a handful of wifi adapters, though it may be solved in some by switching off "power save/sleep mode" on the adapter itself. This way, the adapter or router (i'm not sure which one is to blame) isn't tricked into thinking that the hotspot is down, and thus breaking the association.

The adapters which I suspect are subject to this problem include:

WL-388 mini-USB device (Gemtek?)
Linksys WUSB11 V2.5 Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter
Intel PRO 3945 ABG (in Dell Inspiron E1505)
D-Link DWL-510
D-link airplus DWL-650+

The problem that i have seen with the Nokia E61 is when it opens the browser and goes to login.fon.com there is a browser crash...

Fon may have to look at a drifferent login page for all the user agents...
So that mobile and pda have there own logon page...

There is a menu for WLAN in System=>Settings=>Connections=>Wireless LAN. There you have to press the Options button and select "extended settings", you will find the power save feature there. My E61 is a german version so my english translations may not reflect the actual values.

Unfortunately turning of the power save feature drains the batttery. It's not possible to have a constant connection to the Fonera for push email or VoIP, the batteries is empty in just a few hours, and the phone gets noticeable warm.

Bye,
Jan

Thank you , it helps - E61 starts browsing, but batteries immediately gets warm. But Voip is not working - always "No Wlan coverage for making an Internet call" or "Internet telephone service not available" . What's the reason? Any solution ?

I have the same problem with brand new Nokia E51.
That is, public connection works flawlessly, but private network hangs after few seconds.

I think that it's la Fonera fault, because I'm using my Nokia successfully in the office, where we have WiFi network based on Cisco Access Points and these APs have at least 4 different logical networks.

Please guys, fix the thing in La Fonera firmware!

Hi,
I'm using Linksys WUSB11 v2.6, and I have the same problem reported here.

Is there anything I can do so I can use the MyPlace network?

Best regards,

Hello!

I'm using an e70 and I have the same Problem. The MyPlace connection breaks after a few seconds. I have the same issue with a ipw3945 WLAN adaptor in my thinkpad t60 using the iwlwifi driver under linux btw.

Please update the firmware to fix this!

I've just tested to disable the energy saving mode in my phone and now it works. Unfortunately the battery now drains a lot too quickly (a couple of hours). Is there another solution to this problem then to turn off the private AP? Will my data be sent unencrypted when I use the public one? Is there a tool that automatically connects me to my fon public ap for windows?

I'm confused. Which did you do: disable the handset's power save/sleep ability, or did you disable the private SSID? Or both?

The public wifi network does not provide encryption, but your handset might be encrypting your conversation for you.

Yes, it is. I'm using ConnectaFON software it works quite well. I found it a better solution than disabling power save in Nokia.
Also, I had to remove profile connected to MyPlace network from Nokia to get good stability.

FYI- I've listed a whole bunch of "connection helpers" for handsets and PCs in my blog sidebar. 8)

I suppose it could be an idea to turn off the power saving, but at the same time also to limit the TX Power to 10 mW instead of 100 mW. The lowest power for my E51 is 4 mW.

Concerning Windows connection you can check this one, but I haven't tested it.
