I heard something about being able to send out two SSIDs. Is that something FON has on the WRT54G routers yet? Are there directions somewhere?

Coming soon... ish... well overdue.

Will the second SSID have the ability to not require FON authentication and be locked down with WPA2, WEP and whatever?

Yes that's the "plan". Not sure if the second SSID will have LAN access though.

The "dual SSID" firmware was supposed to come out in mid-July. They have now made an announcement about new firmware coming out in mid-August instead, but it looks like a PPPoE bugfix. They haven't breathed a word about dual SSIDs since they claimed they were working on it. They don't even mention it as a future solution to ongoing problems. It sounds like it's not working as well as hoped on DD-WRT either. This smells like a feature that is being quietly dropped.

That said, I would be delighted if it showed up in the next version and even worked.

Because there is actually no second SSID i installed openVPN on my openWRT Firmware 0.6.6 FON-router. So i can use encryption. with iptables i can connect over openVPN (tun1) to my local LAN.

my german instruction:

Code:

The DD-WRT developer spoke of having many different SSIDs, eight or more as I recall. Each one could potentially be firewalled differently, and use different forms of encryption. :o

Later he spoke of problems with laptops that are connected to one of the SSIDs as they take turns broadcasting, as there was a disconnection problem. His proposed solution was to make only one SSID that broadcasts, and leave the others "hidden". 8)

I regret that I haven't had the time to try the new multi-SSID DD-WRT firmware due to being away from home a lot lately. :(

That firmware is still in alpha phase.

Fon email support is stating that the dual-SSID firmware will only work on the "El Cheapo" (La Fonera) custom router that fon is having built for them.
If true, this means that people with Linksys and Buffalo based routers are being abandoned. :x

I'll certainly join others in attempting to get the dual-SSID version of DD-WRT working to share the connection with a fon login webpage, but if it proves impossible,
IT IS THE END. :x
