Hello world.

I've just received the FON newsletter announcing that anyone will now get 15 minutes of free access to FON hotspots after watching some advertising clip and registering.

To what extent do Aliens need to register in order to get that 15-minutes-access? Are they required to provide a credit card or PayPal account in order to verify themselves or will anyone with a working eMail address be able of accessing our hotspots?

regards,

Inquisitor

What bothers me is the new terms. FON is responsible for nothing any of these people do while connected. Bills get a percentage but they only get five cents per 15 minutes.

They don't say what percentage of the revenue FON receives is. This should be fifty percent but its hard to believe that FON is only getting ten cents.

Hi inquisitor,

I would change the topic into "15 min free Alien surfing - a servere security risk?"

FON seems to have realised ist:
"Enjoy 15 minutes of FREE FON WiFi Access everyday (Free access promotion limited to one session per user per day)"

This is an offer for all Aliens registers just with their names and e-mail addresses.
It's easy to fake an e-mail address to get an Alien account.
For me these 15 min free are a severe security problem!

Slogan:
===========================================
To all housebreakers: Please tell me honestly your name and e-mail
and I'll let you undisturbed enter my home für 15 minutes, then I
close the door again. But please promise to be candid.
===========================================

There were a lot of concern in the board when discussing this a few weeks ago - FON ignored this completely?

BTW: Let's count with the information you get @ http://english.martinvarsavsky.net/fon/ ... onera.html
5 Eurocent per watched video to FON, so after fees and taxex maximun 2 Eurocent per video to each Bill.
30 Euro to get a payment -> 1500 (!) watched videos necessary.
With 3 Aliens each day (which is utopia) you need 500 days to complete the 30 Euros.
This is taking the mickey out of us.

To all FON officials - What will you do to counteract this lack of security?

Regards, Kyros

could you check if Fon uses "mac" checking as well?
when registrating a fonera router it logs your macadres ...
is it doing this as well for the video?

hence they are using google technology for these ads...
probably those prices are also coming from them
as well as the security against website owners trying to gete the money themselves...

Hi

I am very disappointed in this move that FON has decieded to introduce.

1st off as a poster has already stated, no verification of email accounts is done, infact, just type in any old junk that comes to mind when creating an account and any tom, dick or pedo can login.

2nd, I am now logged in with a 2nd "15min" account, again same process, just fill in loads of junk, while the mac addr check is all fine and dandy, it took me less than 2 mins to download a trial version of mac changer for windhoez machine, in linux, i can do this all day long with just an ifconfig mac_addr.

some might argue that "oh well not a lot of people know how to change their mac addr" but me knowing how lax FON monitoring is, I've had my own security setup from the word go and have already caught an alien downloading aircrack, obviously to crack my neigbours wifi.

as a result of this, im hanging up my FON gloves, its been an interesting relasionship this past year, but im off to get me a sputnik account.

nice knowing you all

cheerio!

indeed Ross never gave any feedback(never received any feedback?)

Will the people who surf for free with the help of ads have to register too?

The beauty was that you knew that every alien or linus or bill connecting thru ones fonera was registerd and would not be out there to cause problems.

With the ads how can I as a linus be sure my fonera is not used to do bad things?

Ad supported is just fine as long as there is somekind of proof of identity.

Will the free access appear in our access log? That's pretty important I think. I want to know if the same person is using 15 mins a day free forever or not.

Also, support page info now reads
"All users will only be able to get a free trial once a day per user and device."
So I guess some sort of mac logging must take place.

yes...and 80% of all windows wifi XP can go to network neighborhood; properties -> network device -> network address : change it ... without a reboot ;-)
not even need to install&download anything...

I guess there should at least be firewalling available -> SMTP DENIED?

if you reread my post, while mac loggin is enabled, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to download a mac changer, i posted my first post in this thread from a new account, roughly 30 mins after i created the first "15min" account.

regards

skynetbbs: I really actually thought FON was getting their act together, but apart from the "make over" nothing has really changed.

no as a hotspot owner i wouldn't be happy with this feature...
they can connect to my FREE URL
and they can GOOGLE...
and they can read Martin's Blog
they should have enough with those 3 things to find out if my hotspot is valuable ...

I guess the "ads"-feature wasn't going to be part of the "betatest"-team :-)
and the comments in the blog never got their attention?

now that they have send all those emails they can hardly discontinue it :(

yes it's indeed badly phrased in windows... "network address" is the mac adres...

I had to use this feature to get a Fonera connected to a UPC Cable modem...
it only allows a registered device to be connected directly...
every broadband router has a "clone my mac"... Fonera doesn't...
so I clone fonera's mac adres in my pc... register with my pc with the identity of a fonera...and then the fonera can joyfully play with my broadband...

Mvg
Steven

rushed planning as per usual, they've lost me as a fonera now anyway, my hotspots are offline, you would have thought, they could have atleast contacted the longest serving people on these boards like yourself, austin, kyros, for 1-2-1 feedback and as i understand it, you all have technical backround, but no, el presidente has spoken!!!

@cryptic.scriptz

Are you serious? Is there not even an eMail-based verification?

That means practically there's no authentication required to get on my hotspot now.
According to German jurisdiction now I'm definitely responsible for legal violations of those 15-minutes-aliens.

That's absolutely unbelievable! Allthough FON is subject to permanent criticism regarding security, they've made it completely unsecure now.

I will disconnect my hotspot by tomorrow, as soon as I'm at home again.

they contacted us via the blog...
they got a response via the blog...
I'm not into writing "I second this opinion" in a blog...they should have organised a vote like Inquisitor is doing now...."
they read the response on the blog...they forwarded it to their managment team....
and...
they discarded it...

inquisitor: you get a little dinky sign in the corner that says something along the lines of "please verify your account", but thats just eye candy for the already bloated FON portal, you can surf free just ignoring that.

you do get an email...where you can click on it...
but it's not a necessity...
your account is "active" by definition...
you can order & receive anything in the shop without clicking on them...
I soon stopped clicking on these things...

regrettably the "vouchers" for the fonero and fontenna can not be "combined" :-(
