Last wednesday (verry early in the morning) i made a connection to a La Fonera router thats located 9km away (made only a connection (ping) no real data transmissing).
Fore this test setup (add one (th far) end) i connected a La Fonera router to a 8x8 waveguide antenne (just like we build add the last WirelessPowerKamp-2007 .
The Waveguide got mounted add a +/- 18 meters above the ground and the coax cable connection between the Fonera and the waveguide is only 1meter short.
Add this end i used a modified (butget) USB WiFi stick (brand = Canyon) (the only modification on/add the (butget) USB WiFi stick is a external antenna RPsma connector)connected to a 60cm primefoces (modified) satellite dish with a cantenna s feeding ellement (shown in thepic below).

This primefoces dish is also mounted add 18 meter above the ground and connected to the modified (butget) USB WiFi stick with 24 meters of AircomPlus coax cable.
(sadly a nuf i lost the picture made during this long distance test, stupedly i erased the SDcard (sorry))
The only thing i still got left off this adventure is the screenshot pic shown below.

I have a feeling you're going to be featured in the next Fon Newsletter about your "Nine Km Fon Hotspot".

You really achieved a two-way connection, and not just detection of the SSID? The big antenna was only on your side, and the Fon router 9 Km away was using the standard antenna that comes with it?

no the fonera was attached to this big antenna;
and he had a usb wifi stick inside a "cantenna" pointing at that big antenna...

so it was a point2point connection
so everybody in a radius of 9km who puts a usb wifi stick in the center of his sattelite dish ; pointing at his sattelite dish instead of satelite in space; can get free wifi....

due to his 18meters high everybody who dares going onto his roof can do a line in sight with his antenna...

2,4ghz and 5ghz can give you great distances if you focus the beam instead of casting it into any direction (up/down...)

Yes, made a 2 way connection Pings and Pongs, the data stream was to low to really make a internet connection, bud iam shure if the coax cable between the primefocus dish and my butget WiFi USB stick where just 1 or 2 meters inplace of the 24 meter i used now i probely good get a internet connection.

so the uplink was 18meters high... and pointing at what degree to the ground?

and the waveguide was 1 to 2meter above the ground; As o my knowledge a waveguide has no "uptilt" like those "jedi antenna" stuff.... so you had to point it also towards your sattelite dish?
and there was line in sight.. eg no trees/houses?

I like the way you spell things out the way they would sound... but when pronounced with a Dutch accent!

Just finished building the waveguide...
